Mowery Expands into West Virginia

Mowery has partnered with BPG Development on the construction of a 350,000+ square foot warehouse in Martinsburg. With a projected completion date of January 2019, this warehouse build is Mowery’s first expansion into West Virginia.

Seth Hughes, VP of Preconstruction, led the company’s efforts to navigate West Virginia’s rigorous certified general contractor licensing process. Due to the inherent complexity of a project of this size, the state of West Virginia required Seth (and Mowery) to successfully pass numerous exams to demonstrate proficiency in virtually every area of construction. “We knew we needed to act quickly if we wanted to capitalize on the opportunity to expand our service area into WV. Recalling some all night, cram session skills from my PSU days, I was able to prepare and pass two exams in under a week.” – Seth Hughes. 

As an out-of-state general contractor, Mowery faced challenges in assembling a team of subcontractors from both Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Four major West Virginia-based subcontractors were selected for the project through a bid process, as were several Pennsylvania-based longtime Mowery subcontractors. The West Virginia-based subcontractors were educated on The Mowery Way, including our best-in-class safety requirements and standard operating procedures.

Wet weather since the end of summer has hampered progress, but the project team (Don Sokoloski – Project Manager; Bill Sanders – Project Engineer; Matt Christopher – Superintendent; Michele Appleby – Project Coordinator) worked diligently to keep the project on schedule. Mowery is currently working with both the developer and their tenant to customize half of the building to fit their needs.
