Mowery Partners with Harristown Enterprise on 76-apartment Urban Renewal Project

At Mowery, relationships matter. It’s one of our core foundations or values we focus on every day. So, we do not take it lightly that in 2018, 76 percent of the projects were for clients with whom we have had long-standing relationships.

Harristown Enterprise is one of these clients we value greatly. Together, we approach each project with a mutual understanding and respect for how to not only best execute on the project but also how to work as a team towards a common goal.

What started as a friendship between Brad Jones and Don Mowery, 20 years later, Harristown Enterprise and Mowery have completed over 20 projects together. The most recent collaboration is the construction of the first major apartment complex downtown in the city of Harrisburg since the 1980s.

This urban renewal project will transform two existing office buildings into a mixed-use space including state-of-the-art apartments. While externally the building’s facade will remain untouched, internally the aging mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems will all be completely upgraded. When complete, these mixed-use properties will house 74 spacious one- and two- bedroom apartments, retail amenities and on-site parking. Design will be uniquely themed to each of the two buildings and prospective apartment tenants can choose between a modern farmhouse and a mid-century aesthetic.

The hustle and bustle of cities makes site logistics for urban renewal projects challenging. However, Mowery’s goal when undertaking any project is to minimize disruption to area residents while adhering to construction timelines. In urban renewal projects, this means sometimes getting creative by using existing window openings to facilitate more effective movement of materials in and out of the buildings as demolition begins, as well as securing access to a private parking lots so street parking can be kept open for city residents.
