Bucknell University’s Recreation & Athletic Center features a state-of-the-art basketball arena with a lobby that boasts extensive millwork. An olympic-size pool is another asset of the building, providing space to host regional swim championship events.
This project faced two specific challenges. First, the new building site was situated between two existing structures, which required very complex planning for excavation and construction methods. In addition, after various tests were performed, the soil at the site location was found to be unsuitable.
To construct the new facility between the two existing buildings, Mowery removed part of one of the existing buildings and used underpinning to construct the new center. Extensive engineering was required for the foundation to account for the unsuitable soil.
Mowery also worked hard to develop innovative ways to reduce costs throughout the project. As a result, the project was finished on budget at completion. All parties involved worked together efficiently in developing solutions for the project’s challenges and completed the construction with client satisfaction as the priority.
