Matrix Development – Walmart Fulfillment Center

Matrix Development – Walmart Fulfillment Center exterior

Mowery teamed with Matrix Development, Bernardon Architects and Paragon Engineering Services, to complete our largest project to date – a 1,823,900 SF fulfillment center for Walmart in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. Serving as the general contractor at risk, our team ensured quality control, overseeing subcontractors, and efficiently managing the project timeline and budget.

After being awarded the project, our team began site work in August 2020. By December, the foundation was poured, and construction proceeded as planned. With a very aggressive timeline and a strict completion date, it was imperative our team worked throughout the winter months to ensure the project stayed on schedule. To meet our deadline, we hired multiple subcontractors for the same trade (e.g., two roofing subcontractors, two electrical subcontractors, etc.). This manpower was critical to the project’s success. Additionally, we had the building designed with precast insulated concrete walls versus cast-in place tilt wall panels. The final build was completed on time and Walmart was able to install racking and material handling equipment as scheduled.

Walmart’s fulfillment center features three offices/breakrooms totaling 18,187 SF. Additionally, the facility has 200 dock levelers/positions as well as a maintenance shop with a welding area and wash bay. The warehouse forklifts are powered by hydrogen that is made with onsite equipment. There are eight hydrogen fuel dispensers in the building. The fulfillment center is fully air conditioned.

To put how large this facility is into perspective, it can hold 483 volleyball courts, 4,559 professional wrestling rings, and over 106 miles of electrical wiring. Walking around the building one time is equal to 1.4 miles.

As our largest project to date, there were challenges to overcome. But, through transparent communication, strategic planning, efficient project management, and an experienced team of warehouse and distribution contractors, we were able to complete the project on time and under budget, providing the owner and tenant with a remarkable construction experience!
