Buildings are more than just spaces, they are places in our community where people work, live and play. It’s with this focus, that it’s important for us as an organization to give back to our community through volunteering time, supporting construction education efforts, and partnering with non-profits.
Giving back through education
“I believe it’s important to give back to the community in areas where we can offer our expertise and impact change for the better,” said Derek Dilks, Mowery director of real estate development.
Because Mowery cares about the future workforce generation, we try to share our construction expertise through opportunities that expose students to the construction industry and other STEM related jobs. This year, Mowery volunteered at Carlisle High School’s Junior Achievement STEM Summit where students were introduced to various STEM activities and professions exposing students to civil engineering.
Mowery has also partnered with the Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA to develop construction related workshops for their STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) mobile program as well as help implement a plan to use their 3-D printer for educational programs.
Additionally, our team was honored to be part of a collaboration with the Cumberland Perry Vocational Technical School and Army Heritage Center Foundation to build a new pavilion at the Army Heritage and Education Center. This was an incredible opportunity to engage with and help local students prepare for a profession in construction by giving them real-world work experience. We’re grateful to have opportunities like these to help with educational initiatives that build up the next generation.
Involvement in our community
“It is important to look outward,” stated Nathan Sholley, Mowery Special Projects Group superintendent. It is part of Mowery’s culture to look outward and see the needs within our community all year long.
- This fall, over 20 Mowery team members volunteered for United Way’s Day of Caring to help clean up the Carlisle Family YMCA‘s George B. Stuart Athletic Fields and Camp Thompson.
- During the holiday season, Mowery helps local families by purchasing gifts for Angel Tree children and ringing bells for the Salvation Army.
- In the Summer, Mowery helps gather school supplies for students for the United Way’s Fill the Bus campaign.
Though Mowery takes great pride in the structures we create, we know there is more to what we physically build. Many of our projects fall within the region where most of our Mowery Team members live, which is one of the many reasons why we’re so grateful for and committed to supporting the communities where our buildings are located.
Elizabeth Lee, Mowery project accountant, shared that supporting community is important, “not only with new structures but also giving back and continuing to make efforts to improve the area we live in.”
